WELCOME TO NASCON Spelling Bee

Every one deserves an opportunity

About Us

The acronym NASCON refers to the National Spelling Competition of Nigeria. It is an innovative national academic programme organized to groom the Nigerian Society especially the school-age, active minds in the art of vocabulary development and spelling. Statistics from reliable local academic bodies reveal that the Nigerian education system is horribly imperilled.
To illustrate, consider the statistics from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on its release of the 2012 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results. Out of the 1,672,224 (one million, six hundred and seventy-two thousand, two hundred and twenty-four) candidates who took the examination, only 952,156 (nine hundred and fifty-two thousand, one hundred and fifty-six) candidates, representing a mere 57 percent obtained at least 5 credits.
From this report, it is an unquestionable fact that the standard of education in Nigeria is consistently falling. The situation has become worrisome, especially during the last two decades, when performance at public examinations and aptitude tests has been inevitably reduced to shameless institutionalized racketeering.
It has been ascertained thus far that the fundamental cause of this ‘disease’ is the near absence of quality linguistic education, in the particular case of Nigeria, education in the English language. Deficiencies in English are a horrible contagion, since all other courses of study in Nigeria – at all tiers of learning – are administered in the medium of English. The number of students who fail the English language at the SSCE and other indigenous examinations is consistently rising each year. There is thus an urgent need for this serious menace to be addressed. It is against this background that NASCON is established.

    Our Mission

  • To stimulate critical thinking ability in school- age learners.
  • To inculcate wholesome academic ideals among NASCON participants.
  • To restore lost education values in Nigeria
  • To promote active familiarity with the English language in Nigeria(through healthy academic competition).
  • To develop and sustain a healthy reading culture among Nigerians.
